Glossary
Deckle
Deckle is the usable width of the paper web a machine makes in one pass.
01 / The word
Where the word comes from
In hand papermaking, the deckle is the frame around the mould. On a paper machine, the deckle sets the width of the paper web.
The feathered edge of handmade paper is still called a deckle edge, in contrast to a cut edge.

02 / Buying
Why deckle matters to you
The deckle is normally fixed for each machine. Every reel width you order is slit from the full web.
Widths filling the web edge to edge leave less trim than one narrow width cut from a wide web. Ask which widths split the web cleanly for your grade.
03 / Our widths
Deckle in a KEIKO PAPERS quote
We slit OGR reels to order, from 300 to 1,200 mm. MG and MF reels run from 500 to 1,500 mm, and kraft reels from 600 to 1,800 mm.
Butter paper rolls come in six standard widths, from 300 to 1,200 mm. Ask the sales desk which widths slit cleanly for your grade.
