Carton liner paper

A carton liner is a sheet laid inside a box before the goods go in. Kraft lines cartons where strength matters. MG lines cartons where the inside is on show.

01 / The job

What a carton liner does

A liner sits between your goods and the corrugated walls of the box. The goods meet a paper you chose, not bare board.

The liner also folds up over the goods before the flaps close, so the top layer stays covered too.

03 / Sizing

Sizing a liner

Cut the liner to cover the base and run up all four walls. Add the carton length and twice the depth for one side. Add the width and twice the depth for the other.

Take a carton 400 mm long, 300 mm wide and 250 mm deep. The liner needs 900 mm one way and 800 mm the other. A 900×1,200 mm kraft sheet covers this carton, with trim to spare on the long side.

04 / Format

Reels or sheets

Sheets suit a packing bench running one or two carton sizes. Kraft comes in 700×1,000 and 900×1,200 mm sheets. MG comes in 500×700 and 700×1,000 mm sheets.

Reels suit lines running many carton sizes, since you cut each liner to length. Kraft reels run 600 to 1,800 mm wide. MG reels run 500 to 1,500 mm wide.

05 / Ordering

Order sizes and lead times

Kraft, bleached kraft and MG all start at 1 tonne per GSM and width. Kraft takes 3 to 6 weeks after spec approval. MG takes 3 to 5 weeks.

Kraft is not for direct food contact. For MG and bleached kraft, ask us before food use. If the carton holds food, wrap the food itself in butter paper or OGR first.

Questions

Before you specify

Kraft or MG for a carton liner?

Kraft when the liner takes strain from heavy or sharp goods. MG when the liner shows on opening and needs a smooth face.

What weight of kraft suits a carton liner?

The weight follows the load. Light goods sit towards 60 GSM. Heavy goods with sharp edges point towards 120 GSM.

Does a liner replace void fill?

No. A liner covers the carton walls. Void fill packs the empty space around the goods. Use both when the goods sit loose in the carton.
